Galveston County is a county located in Texas, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. The population of the county was 250158 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 288239, It is the 16th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 872.93 sq mi (2260.88 square kilometre), of which, 398.47 square miles (1032.03 square kilometre) of it is land and 474.46 square miles (1228.85 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 70th smallest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Texas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 250158 residents, 94782 households, and 66156 families in the county. The population density was 627.8 people per square mile (242.39/kmē), it is the seventh most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Texas. There were 111733 housing units at an average density of 280.4 per square mile (108.26/kmē). The average household size was 2.6 and the average family size was 3.12. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.1 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 288239, The racial makeup of the county was 232994 White, 41524 Black or African American, 1568 American Indian, 8199 Asian, 198 Native Hawaiian, and 3756 from two or more races.
