Gallatin County is one of the 102 county of Illinois, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. It is home to over 6445 people (2000 census). The July 2008 population estimate is 5982, It is the fifth least populous county in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county has a total area of 328.41 square miles (850.58 sq km), of which, 323.73 square miles (838.46 sq km) of it is land and 4.68 square miles (12.12 sq km) of it is water, it is the 15th smallest in terms of geographical size.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 6445 residents, 2726 households, and 1838 families in the county. The population density was 19.9 people per square mile (7.68/kmē), giving it the fourth least densely populated county among the Illinois. There were 3071 housing units at an average density of 9.5 per square mile (3.67/kmē). The average household size was 2.34 people, and the average family size was 2.9 people. Age range in the county was well distributed with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 5982, The racial makeup of the county was 5876 White, 19 Black or African American, 49 American Indian, 3 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 33 from two or more races.
