Gaffney City is a one of the Cherokee County, South Carolina, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, city's population was 12968 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 13200, It is the 32nd most populous in the U.S. state of South Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.89 sq mi (20.44 kmē), of which, 7.86 square miles (20.36 kmē) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 kmē) of it is water, it is the 61st largest by area in the U.S. state of South Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12968 people in the city, organized into 5304 households, and 3335 families living in the city. The population density was 1649.7 people per square mile (636.95/kmē), it is the 37th most populated city in terms of population density. There were 5765 housing units at an average density of 733.5 per square mile (283.21/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.32 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 23.4% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 82.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.7 males. The median age of the city's population was 37.5 years, The median age of males was 35 years, for females the median age was 40.1 years. The racial makeup of the city was 6935 White, 5730 Black or African American, 19 American Indian, 59 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, 92 from two or more races and 129 Ohter races.
