Furnas County is one of the 93 county of Nebraska, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. It is home to over 5324 people (2000 census). Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 4645, making it Nebraska's 57th largest county. Its area is just over 720.51 sq mi (1866.11 square kilometre), of which, 718.09 square miles (1859.84 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.42 square miles (6.27 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Nebraska's 34th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5324 people, 2278 households, and 1490 families residing in the county. The population density was 7.4 people per square mile (2.86/kmē), giving it the 55th most densely populated county among the Nebraska. There were 2730 housing units at an average density of 3.8 per square mile (1.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.88. In the county Age distribution was 24.1% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 4645, The racial makeup of the county was 98.41% White, 0.09% Black or African American, 0.52% American Indian, 0.22% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.78% from two or more races.
