In July 2008, its estimated population was 36719, It is the 39th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county has a total area of 882.59 square miles (2285.9 square kilometre), of which, 865.62 square miles (2241.95 square kilometre) of it is land and 16.97 square miles (43.95 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the ninth largest by size in Illinois.
