Frio County is one of the 254 county of Texas, located towards the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. The county has a population of 16252 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 16163, making it the 134th most populous county in Texas. The county spans an area of 1134.28 mi˛ (2937.77 square kilometre), of which, 1133.02 square miles (2934.51 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.26 square miles (3.26 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 50th largest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 14.3 people per square mile (5.52/km˛), it would be the 152nd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Texas. There were 5660 housing units at an average density of 5 per square mile (1.93/km˛). The average household size was 2.98 persons, and the average family size was 3.44 persons. The population's age distribution was 28.7% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 121.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 130.2 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 16163, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 14957 White, 887 Black or African American, 123 American Indian, 123 Asian, 10 Native Hawaiian, and 63 from two or more races.
