Freestone County is one of the 254 county of Texas, located towards the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 17867. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 18923, making it Texas's 122nd largest county. The county extends throughout a territory of 892.13 sq mi (2310.61 sq km ), of which, 877.43 square miles (2272.53 sq km) of it is land and 14.7 square miles (38.07 sq km) of it is water, making it the 78th smallest by size in Texas.

The population density was 20.4 people per square mile (7.88/kmē), it is Texas's 129th most densely populated county. There were 8138 housing units at an average density of 9.3 per square mile (3.59/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 people, and the average family size was 2.98 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 23.6% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 110.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 110.8 males. Its population was estimated at 18923 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 15263 White, 3356 Black or African American, 79 American Indian, 59 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 162 from two or more races.
