The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 51477, making it the 35th most populous county in Virginia. The county comprises an area of 711.56 square miles (1842.93 sq km), of which, 692.08 square miles (1792.48 sq km) of it is land and 19.48 square miles (50.45 sq km) of it is water, it is the ninth largest in terms of geographical size.

In July 2008, its estimated population was 51477, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 89.49% White, 9.05% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 0.39% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.85% from two or more races.
