Franklin County is one of the 95 county of Tennessee, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The county has a population of 39270 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 41165, giving it the 35th largest population among Tennessee's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 575.77 square miles (1491.24 square kilometre), of which, 554.52 square miles (1436.2 square kilometre) of it is land and 21.25 square miles (55.04 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Tennessee's 21st largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 39270 people, 15003 households, and 11160 families living in the county. The population density was 70.8 people per square mile (27.34/kmē), it would be the 43rd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. There were 16813 housing units at an average density of 30.3 per square mile (11.7/kmē). The average household size was 2.51 persons, and the average family size was 2.92 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 23% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 41165, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 38094 White, 2278 Black or African American, 90 American Indian, 227 Asian, 14 Native Hawaiian, and 462 from two or more races.
