Franklin County, North Carolina is a county of the United States of North Carolina. As of 2000 the population was 47260. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 58927, making it the 44th most populous county in North Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 494.59 mi˛ (1280.98 sq km), of which, 492.02 square miles (1274.33 sq km) of it is land and 2.57 square miles (6.66 sq km) of it is water, making it the 49th largest by size in North Carolina.

The population density was 96.1 people per square mile (37.1/km˛), it is North Carolina's 52nd most densely populated county. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 11% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 102.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 104.8 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 58927, The racial makeup of the county was 42170 White, 15694 Black or African American, 243 American Indian, 300 Asian, 22 Native Hawaiian, and 498 from two or more races.
