As of July 2008, the estimated population was 50521, It is the 16th smallest in terms of population. The county encompasses an area of 1697.44 sq mi (4396.35 sq km ), of which, 1631.49 square miles (4225.54 sq km) of it is land and 65.95 square miles (170.81 sq km) of it is water, making it the sixth largest by size in New York.

In the county Age distribution was 22.8% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 82.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 79 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 50521, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 42938 White, 3555 Black or African American, 3399 American Indian, 229 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 398 from two or more races.
