The county encompasses an area of 1697.44 sq mi (4396.35 sq km ), of which, 1631.49 square miles (4225.54 sq km) of it is land and 65.95 square miles (170.81 sq km) of it is water, making it the sixth largest by size in New York.

The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 50521, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 42938 White, 3555 Black or African American, 3399 American Indian, 229 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 398 from two or more races.
