Franklin County is a county located in the United States of Mississippi. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 8448 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 8316, giving it the fourth smallest population among Mississippi's county. It covers total area of 566.74 mi˛ (1467.85 sq km), of which, 564.6 square miles (1462.31 sq km) of it is land and 2.14 square miles (5.54 sq km) of it is water, it is the 43rd largest by area in the U.S. state of Mississippi.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8448 people, 3211 households, and 2337 families residing in the county. The population density was 15 people per square mile (5.79/km˛), it is the third least populated county in terms of population density. There were 4119 housing units at an average density of 7.3 per square mile (2.82/km˛). The average household size was 2.6 and the average family size was 3.13. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 27.3% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.1 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 8316, The racial makeup of the county was 61.89% White, 37.18% Black or African American, 0.23% American Indian, 0.07% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.63% from two or more races.
