Franklin County is one of the 14 county of Massachusetts, located towards the Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. The population of the county was 71535 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 71735, It is the third smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Its area is just over 724.74 miē (1877.07 kmē), of which, 702.03 square miles (1818.25 kmē) of it is land and 22.71 square miles (58.82 kmē) of it is water, making it the seventh largest by size in Massachusetts.

The population density was 101.9 people per square mile (39.34/kmē), it is least densely populated county in Massachusetts. There were 31939 housing units at an average density of 45.5 per square mile (17.57/kmē). The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.95. Age range in the county was well distributed with 23.5% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 71735, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 68342 White, 924 Black or African American, 241 American Indian, 1074 Asian, 18 Native Hawaiian, and 1136 from two or more races.
