Franklin County is one of the 16 county of Maine, located towards the Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. In 2000, the population was 29467. Its population was estimated at 29857 in July 2008, It is the second least populous county in the U.S. state of Maine. It has total area of 1744.31 square miles (4517.74 kmē), of which, 1697.81 square miles (4397.31 kmē) of it is land and 46.5 square miles (120.43 kmē) of it is water, making it Maine's eighth largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 29467 people, 11806 households, and 7748 families residing in the county. The population density was 17.4 people per square mile (6.72/kmē), it would be the fifth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Maine. There were 19159 housing units at an average density of 11.3 per square mile (4.36/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.4 persons, and the average family size was 2.88 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.5% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 112.2 females. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 29857, The racial makeup of the county was 29202 White, 108 Black or African American, 118 American Indian, 158 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 266 from two or more races.
