Franklin County is a county located in Kentucky, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 47687 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 48844, giving it the 17th largest population among Kentucky's county. It is spread over 212.11 sq mi (549.36 sq km), of which, 210.46 square miles (545.09 sq km ) of it is land and 1.65 square miles (4.27 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 24th smallest by total area among Kentucky's county.

The population density was 226.6 people per square mile (87.49/kmē), it is the ninth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. There were 21409 housing units at an average density of 101.7 per square mile (39.27/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.3 persons, and the average family size was 2.86 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 22.6% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 106.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111.5 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 48844, The racial makeup of the county was 42505 White, 5091 Black or African American, 85 American Indian, 477 Asian, 11 Native Hawaiian, and 675 from two or more races.
