Franklin County is a county located in Kansas, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 24784. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 26562, It is 23rd most populous county in Kansas. Its area is just over 576.65 mi˛ (1493.52 square kilometre), of which, 573.85 square miles (1486.26 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.8 square miles (7.25 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 16th smallest by total area in Kansas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 24784 people, 9452 households, and 6722 families living in the county. The population density was 43.2 people per square mile (16.68/km˛), it is the 15th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kansas. There were 10229 housing units at an average density of 17.8 per square mile (6.87/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.56 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 14% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 26562, The racial makeup of the county was 25286 White, 390 Black or African American, 259 American Indian, 194 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 432 from two or more races.
