Franklin County is a county located in Iowa, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 10704 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 10477, giving it the 26th smallest population among Iowa's county. The county has a total area of 583.01 mi˛ (1509.99 square kilometre), of which, 582.44 square miles (1508.51 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.57 square miles (1.48 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 29th largest by total area among Iowa's county.

The population density was 18.4 people per square mile (7.1/km˛), it would be the 18th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Iowa. There were 4763 housing units at an average density of 8.2 per square mile (3.17/km˛). The average household size was 2.41 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county Age distribution was 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.9 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 10477, The racial makeup of the county was 98.61% White, 0.16% Black or African American, 0.31% American Indian, 0.52% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.39% from two or more races.
