Franklin County is a United States county located in the United States of Illinois. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 39018 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 39488, making it the 36th most populous county in Illinois. The county has a total area of 431.4 square miles (1117.32 kmē), of which, 412.08 square miles (1067.28 kmē) of it is land and 19.32 square miles (50.04 kmē) of it is water, it is the 69th largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 39018 people in the county, organized into 16408 households, and 10971 families living in the county. The population density was 94.7 people per square mile (36.56/kmē), it is the 25th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Illinois. There were 18105 housing units at an average density of 43.9 per square mile (16.95/kmē). The average household size was 2.34 persons, and the average family size was 2.89 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 23% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 39488, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.99% White, 0.68% Black or African American, 0.23% American Indian, 0.3% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.79% from two or more races.
