Fort Gaines City is a city located in Clay County, Georgia, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 1110 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 1002 in July 2008, It is the 323rd largest in terms of population. The city extends throughout a territory of 7.72 square miles (19.99 square kilometre ), of which, 4.79 square miles (12.41 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.93 square miles (7.59 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 109th largest by total area among Georgia. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in Georgia.

For every 100 males there were 138.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 151.9 females. The median age of the city's population was 38.9 years, The median age of males was 35.2 years, for females the median age was 41.6 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 31.08% White, 67.93% Black or African American, 0.18% American Indian, 0.18% Asian, 0.09% Native Hawaiian, 0.54% from two or more races and 0% Other races.
