According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 168060, It is the 12th most populous county in the U.S. state of Georgia. The county encompasses an area of 247.37 miē (640.69 kmē ), of which, 225.8 square miles (584.82 kmē) of it is land and 21.57 square miles (55.87 kmē) of it is water, it is the 34th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Georgia.
