The July 2008 population estimate is 18328340, It is the fourth largest in terms of population. It is spread over 65754.59 sq mi (170303.61 square kilometre), of which, 53926.82 square miles (139669.82 square kilometre ) of it is land and 11827.77 square miles (30633.78 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 22nd largest by area in the U.S. state of America. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in United States.

The population density was 296.4 people per square mile (114.44/kmē), it is eighth most densely populated state in United States. There were 7302947 housing units at an average density of 135.4 per square mile (52.28/kmē). The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.98. In the state the population was spread out, with 22.8% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males. The median age of the state's population was 38.7 years, The median age of males was 37.3 years, for females the median age was 40.1 years. Its population was estimated at 15982378 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the state was 12465029 White, 2335505 Black or African American, 53541 American Indian, 266256 Asian, 8625 Native Hawaiian, 376315 from two or more races and 477107 Ohter races.
