The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 2910, giving it the 223rd largest population among North Carolina. It covers total area of 7.94 square miles (20.56 sq km), of which, 7.84 square miles (20.31 sq km) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 sq km) of it is water, it is the 101st largest in terms of geographical size.
