Fentress County is a United States county located in the United States of Tennessee. As of 2000 the population was 16625. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 17667, making it the 24th least populous county in Tennessee. It covers total area of 498.97 square miles (1292.33 kmē), of which, 498.64 square miles (1291.47 kmē) of it is land and 0.33 square miles (0.85 kmē) of it is water, it is the 41st largest by area in the U.S. state of Tennessee.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16625 people, 6693 households, and 4819 families living in the county. The population density was 33.3 people per square mile (12.86/kmē), it is the eighth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. There were 7598 housing units at an average density of 15.2 per square mile (5.87/kmē). The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.94. In the Fentress County, 24.2% of the population was under the age of 18, 8% were 18 to 24, 28.1% were 25 to 44, 26.1% were 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.1 males. Its population was estimated at 17667 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 98.96% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.14% American Indian, 0.1% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.45% from two or more races.
