The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 46341, It is the 12th largest county by population in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The county comprises an area of 668.36 sq mi (1731.04 sq km), of which, 663.93 square miles (1719.57 sq km) of it is land and 4.43 square miles (11.47 sq km) of it is water, makes it the sixth largest by total area in West Virginia.
