Fayette County is one of the 95 county of Tennessee, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 28806 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 38173, It is Tennessee's 40th most populous county. The county encompasses an area of 706.23 square miles (1829.13 kmē ), of which, 704.5 square miles (1824.65 kmē) of it is land and 1.73 square miles (4.48 kmē) of it is water, making it the third largest by size in Tennessee.

As of the census of 2000, there were 28806 residents, 10467 households, and 8020 families in the county. The population density was 40.9 people per square mile (15.79/kmē), it is the 21st least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. There were 11214 housing units at an average density of 15.9 per square mile (6.14/kmē). The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.14. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 13% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 38173, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 27025 White, 10218 Black or African American, 68 American Indian, 487 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 372 from two or more races.
