Fayette County is a county located in Pennsylvania, in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. The population of the county was 148644 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 143925, It is the 25th largest in terms of population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 798 mi˛ (2066.81 square kilometre), of which, 790.14 square miles (2046.45 square kilometre) of it is land and 7.86 square miles (20.36 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 24th largest by size in Pennsylvania.

The population density was 188.1 people per square mile (72.63/km˛), making its Pennsylvania's 28th most densely populated county. There were 66490 housing units at an average density of 84.1 per square mile (32.47/km˛). The average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.6 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 143925, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 136073 White, 5912 Black or African American, 195 American Indian, 437 Asian, 18 Native Hawaiian, and 1290 from two or more races.
