Fayette County is a county located in Illinois, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 21802 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 20981 in July 2008, giving it the 57th largest population among Illinois's county. It has total area of 725.36 square miles (1878.67 kmē), of which, 716.49 square miles (1855.7 kmē) of it is land and 8.87 square miles (22.97 kmē) of it is water, it is the 22nd largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

The population density was 30.4 people per square mile (11.74/kmē), making its Illinois's 22nd least densely populated county. There were 9053 housing units at an average density of 12.6 per square mile (4.86/kmē). The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.98. In the county Age distribution was 23.8% under the age of 18, 9% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 108.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 111.5 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 20981, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.16% White, 3.79% Black or African American, 0.15% American Indian, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.6% from two or more races.
