Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17691, making it Alabama's 16th smallest county. The county has a total area of 629.34 mi˛ (1629.98 sq km), of which, 627.66 square miles (1625.63 sq km) of it is land and 1.68 square miles (4.35 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 45th largest by total area in Alabama.
