Fayette County is a United States county located in the United States of Alabama. The population of county in 2000 stood at 18495 as per the Census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17691, making it Alabama's 16th smallest county. The county has a total area of 629.34 mi˛ (1629.98 sq km), of which, 627.66 square miles (1625.63 sq km) of it is land and 1.68 square miles (4.35 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 45th largest by total area in Alabama.

The July 2008 population estimate is 17691, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 15289 White, 2202 Black or African American, 41 American Indian, 49 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 108 from two or more races.
