Fauquier County is a county located in Virginia, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 55139 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 66839, It is the 27th most populous county in the U.S. state of Virginia. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 651.42 mi˛ (1687.17 sq km), of which, 649.7 square miles (1682.72 sq km) of it is land and 1.72 square miles (4.45 sq km) of it is water, making it Virginia's 11th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 55139 people in the county, organized into 19842 households, and 15140 families residing in the county. The population density was 84.9 people per square mile (32.78/km˛), it would be the 72nd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 21046 housing units at an average density of 32.4 per square mile (12.51/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.75 persons, and the average family size was 3.14 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 26.8% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 66839, The racial makeup of the county was 58466 White, 6059 Black or African American, 168 American Indian, 1035 Asian, 37 Native Hawaiian, and 1074 from two or more races.
