Fairfield City is a United States city located in the Jefferson County, Iowa, United States. In 2000, the population was 9509. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 9218, making it the 36th most populous in Iowa. The city spans an area of 5.87 mi˛ (15.2 square kilometre), of which, 5.74 square miles (14.87 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.13 square miles (0.34 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 58th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9509 residents, 4063 households, and 2374 families in the city. The population density was 1657.4 people per square mile (639.93/km˛), it is the 78th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Iowa. There were 4463 housing units at an average density of 777.5 per square mile (300.19/km˛). The average household size was 2.22 persons, and the average family size was 2.9 persons.
