Fairfax City is one of the city of Renville County, Minnesota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 1295 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 1208, making it the 292nd most populous in Minnesota. It is spread over 1.29 square miles (3.34 kmē), makes it the 422nd largest by total area in Minnesota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1295 residents, 534 households, and 336 families in the city. The population density was 1006.6 people per square mile (388.65/kmē), it is Minnesota's 291st most densely populated city. There were 589 housing units at an average density of 456.6 per square mile (176.29/kmē). The average household size was 2.32 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons. In the city the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 27.7% who were 65 or older.
