Etowah County is one of the 67 county of Alabama, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. Etowah County had an official population of 103459 in 2000. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 103303, It is the 11th most populous county in the U.S. state of Alabama. Its area is just over 548.75 square miles (1421.26 square kilometre), of which, 534.82 square miles (1385.18 square kilometre) of it is land and 13.93 square miles (36.08 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the smallest in terms of geographical size.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 103459 people, 41615 households, and 29467 families residing in the county. The population density was 193.4 people per square mile (74.67/kmē), it is fifth most densely populated county in Alabama. There were 45959 housing units at an average density of 85.9 per square mile (33.17/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.44 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 16% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 109 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 113.8 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 103303, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 83.35% White, 14.77% Black or African American, 0.36% American Indian, 0.52% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 0.95% from two or more races.
