Essex County, Virginia is a county of the United States of Virginia. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 9989 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 11091, making it the 22nd least populous county in Virginia. The county encompasses an area of 285.91 square miles (740.5 square kilometre ), of which, 257.77 square miles (667.62 square kilometre) of it is land and 28.14 square miles (72.88 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 76th largest by size in Virginia.


As of the census of 2000, there were 9989 people, 3995 households, and 2741 families living in the county. The population density was 38.8 people per square mile (14.98/kmē), making its Virginia's 21st least densely populated county. There were 4926 housing units at an average density of 19.1 per square mile (7.37/kmē). The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.95. In the Essex County, 22.9% of the population was under the age of 18, 7% were 18 to 24, 27% were 25 to 44, 25.7% were 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 11091, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 58.65% White, 38.17% Black or African American, 0.53% American Indian, 1.07% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.55% from two or more races.
