Essex County, Vermont is a county located in the Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. It is home to over 6459 people (2000 census). The July 2008 population estimate is 6500, It is least populous county in Vermont. The county extends throughout a territory of 673.75 square miles (1745 sq km ), of which, 665.2 square miles (1722.86 sq km) of it is land and 8.56 square miles (22.17 sq km) of it is water, giving it the tenth largest by total area among Vermont's county. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in Vermont.

The population density was 9.7 people per square mile (3.75/kmē), it is Vermont's least densely populated county. There were 4762 housing units at an average density of 7.2 per square mile (2.78/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.92. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.6% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 99.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 101 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 6500, The racial makeup of the county was 96.54% White, 0.4% Black or African American, 0.63% American Indian, 0.52% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 1.91% from two or more races.
