Essex County is one of the 62 county of New York, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. It is home to over 38851 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 37826, giving it the seventh smallest population among New York's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1916.5 mi˛ (4963.71 square kilometre), of which, 1796.8 square miles (4653.69 square kilometre) of it is land and 119.7 square miles (310.02 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the third largest by total area among New York's county.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 38851 people, 15028 households, and 9832 families residing in the county. The population density was 21.6 people per square mile (8.34/km˛), making it the third least densely populated county in New York. There were 23115 housing units at an average density of 12.9 per square mile (4.98/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the Essex County, 22.8% of the population was under the age of 18, 6.9% were 18 to 24, 29.8% were 25 to 44, 24.5% were 45 to 64, and 16% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 107.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.6 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 37826, The racial makeup of the county was 35957 White, 1130 Black or African American, 134 American Indian, 247 Asian, 40 Native Hawaiian, and 318 from two or more races.
