Essex County is a county located in the United States of New Jersey. As of 2000 the population was 793633. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 770675, making it the third most populous county in New Jersey. It has total area of 129.56 mi˛ (335.56 square kilometre), of which, 126.27 square miles (327.04 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.29 square miles (8.52 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the third smallest by size in New Jersey.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 793633 residents, 283736 households, and 193498 families in the county. The population density was 6285.4 people per square mile (2426.81/km˛), it is the second most densely populated county in the U.S. state of New Jersey. There were 301011 housing units at an average density of 2383.9 per square mile (920.43/km˛). The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.3. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.1% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 110.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 115.8 females. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 770675, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 51.73% White, 41.9% Black or African American, 0.4% American Indian, 4.41% Asian, 0.14% Native Hawaiian, and 1.41% from two or more races.
