Essex County is a one of the county from Massachusetts's 14 counties, located in Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. The population of the county was 723419 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 736457, It is Massachusetts's third most populous county. It has total area of 828.53 miē (2145.88 kmē), of which, 500.67 square miles (1296.73 kmē) of it is land and 327.86 square miles (849.15 kmē) of it is water, it is the sixth largest by area in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Massachusetts.

The population density was 1444.9 people per square mile (557.88/kmē), it is the fourth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. There were 287144 housing units at an average density of 573.5 per square mile (221.43/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.57 persons, and the average family size was 3.15 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 736457, The racial makeup of the county was 658863 White, 39188 Black or African American, 2523 American Indian, 22509 Asian, 792 Native Hawaiian, and 12582 from two or more races.
