Esmeralda County is a county located in the United States of Nevada. As of 2000 the population was 971. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 677, It is the least populous county in the U.S. state of Nevada. It has total area of 3589 sq mi (9295.47 kmē), of which, 3588.5 square miles (9294.17 kmē) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.29 kmē) of it is water, it is the fifth smallest by area in the U.S. state of Nevada.

As of the census of 2000, there were 971 people in the county, organized into 455 households, and 260 families living in the county. The population density was 0.3 people per square mile (0.12/kmē), it would be the least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Nevada. There were 833 housing units at an average density of 0.2 per square mile (0.08/kmē). The average household size was 2.12 people, and the average family size was 2.79 people. In the Esmeralda County, 20.5% of the population was under the age of 18, 6% were 18 to 24, 23.4% were 25 to 44, 33% were 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 123.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 118.7 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 677, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 88.33% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 7.24% American Indian, 0% Asian, 0.3% Native Hawaiian, and 3.99% from two or more races.
