Erie County is a county located in the United States of Pennsylvania. The county has a population of 280843 as per the 2000 census data. The July 2008 population estimate is 279175, making it Pennsylvania's 14th largest county. The county comprises an area of 1558.4 square miles (4036.24 kmē), of which, 801.95 square miles (2077.04 kmē) of it is land and 756.46 square miles (1959.22 kmē) of it is water, making it Pennsylvania's largest county by total area. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Pennsylvania.

As of the census of 2000, there were 280843 people in the county, organized into 106507 households, and 71039 families residing in the county. The population density was 350.2 people per square mile (135.21/kmē), it is 18th most densely populated county in Pennsylvania. There were 114322 housing units at an average density of 142.6 per square mile (55.06/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.51 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 25% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 279175, The racial makeup of the county was 90.98% White, 6.71% Black or African American, 0.2% American Indian, 0.77% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.31% from two or more races.
