Erie County is a county located in the United States of Ohio. It is home to over 79551 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 77062, making it the 32nd most populous county in Ohio. The county extends throughout a territory of 626.15 sq mi (1621.72 sq km ), of which, 254.88 square miles (660.14 sq km) of it is land and 371.27 square miles (961.58 sq km) of it is water, it is the tenth largest by area in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Ohio.

The population density was 312.1 people per square mile (120.5/kmē), it would be the 18th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Ohio. There were 35909 housing units at an average density of 140.9 per square mile (54.4/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 77062, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 68375 White, 6700 Black or African American, 201 American Indian, 460 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 1322 from two or more races.
