Erie County is a county located in New York, in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Erie County is home to 950265 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 909845, It is New York's eighth most populous county. It is spread over 1226.89 sq mi (3177.63 kmē), of which, 1044.21 square miles (2704.49 kmē ) of it is land and 182.68 square miles (473.14 kmē) of it is water, it is the 17th largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 950265 people in the county, organized into 380873 households, and 243359 families residing in the county. The population density was 910 people per square mile (351.35/kmē), it is New York's 11th most densely populated county. There were 415868 housing units at an average density of 398.3 per square mile (153.78/kmē). The average household size was 2.41 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. The population's age distribution was 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 909845, The racial makeup of the county was 751548 White, 123423 Black or African American, 6375 American Indian, 17085 Asian, 390 Native Hawaiian, and 11024 from two or more races.
