Emmons County is one of the 53 county of North Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 4331 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 3377, making it the 32nd most populous county in North Dakota. It covers total area of 1554.72 square miles (4026.71 kmē), of which, 1509.88 square miles (3910.57 kmē) of it is land and 44.83 square miles (116.11 kmē) of it is water, it is the 14th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4331 people in the county, organized into 1786 households, and 1241 families residing in the county. The population density was 2.9 people per square mile (1.12/kmē), it is North Dakota's 17th least densely populated county. There were 2168 housing units at an average density of 1.4 per square mile (0.54/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.38 persons, and the average family size was 2.92 persons. In the Emmons County, 24.8% of the population was under the age of 18, 3.7% were 18 to 24, 22.3% were 25 to 44, 23.6% were 45 to 64, and 25.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.9 males.
