Elwood City is one of the city of Doniphan County, Kansas, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 1145. The July 2008 population estimate is 1127, It is the 190th most populous in the U.S. state of Kansas. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.04 sq mi (5.28 square kilometre), it is the 97th largest by area in the U.S. state of Kansas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1145 people, 446 households, and 313 families residing in the city. The population density was 562.9 people per square mile (217.34/kmē), giving it the 150th least densely populated city among the Kansas. There were 494 housing units at an average density of 243.3 per square mile (93.94/kmē). The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.07.
