Elko County is a county in the United States of Nevada. In 2000, county's population was 45291 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 47071, giving it the fifth largest population among Nevada's county. The county has a total area of 17202.94 mi˛ (44555.41 sq km), of which, 17179.03 square miles (44493.48 sq km) of it is land and 23.91 square miles (61.93 sq km) of it is water, it is the second largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in Nevada.

As of the census of 2000, there were 45291 people in the county, organized into 15638 households, and 11493 families residing in the county. The population density was 2.6 people per square mile (1/km˛), it is eighth most densely populated county in Nevada. There were 18456 housing units at an average density of 1.1 per square mile (0.42/km˛). The average household size was 2.85 persons, and the average family size was 3.33 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 32.5% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 108.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 109.4 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 47071, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 90.84% White, 1.18% Black or African American, 5.45% American Indian, 0.82% Asian, 0.15% Native Hawaiian, and 1.56% from two or more races.
