Elk County is a county in the United States of Kansas. The population of county in 2000 stood at 3261 as per the Census data. The July 2008 population estimate is 3047, It is Kansas's 22nd least populous county. Its area is just over 650.36 square miles (1684.42 square kilometre), of which, 647.29 square miles (1676.47 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.07 square miles (7.95 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 29th smallest by total area among Kansas's county.


As of the census of 2000, there were 3261 people in the county, organized into 1412 households, and 924 families living in the county. The population density was 5 people per square mile (1.93/kmē), it is the 28th least populated county in terms of population density. There were 1860 housing units at an average density of 2.9 per square mile (1.12/kmē). The average household size was 2.25 persons, and the average family size was 2.84 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 22.5% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 20% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 25.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males.
