The July 2008 population estimate is 3047, It is Kansas's 22nd least populous county. Its area is just over 650.36 square miles (1684.42 square kilometre), of which, 647.29 square miles (1676.47 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.07 square miles (7.95 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 29th smallest by total area among Kansas's county.
