Edwards County is a county located in Illinois, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 6971. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 6501, It is the ninth smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county spans an area of 222.66 mi˛ (576.69 sq km), of which, 222.35 square miles (575.88 sq km) of it is land and 0.31 square miles (0.8 sq km) of it is water, giving it the fourth smallest by total area among Illinois's county.

The population density was 31.4 people per square mile (12.12/km˛), giving it the 25th least densely populated county among the Illinois. There were 3199 housing units at an average density of 14.4 per square mile (5.56/km˛). The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.88. The population's age distribution was 23.1% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 6501, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98.78% White, 0.2% Black or African American, 0.12% American Indian, 0.38% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 0.46% from two or more races.
