Edgecombe County is a county located in North Carolina, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 55606 as per the Census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 52682, It is 51st most populous county in North Carolina. The county has a total area of 506.58 square miles (1312.04 kmē), of which, 505.03 square miles (1308.02 kmē) of it is land and 1.55 square miles (4.01 kmē) of it is water, it is the 47th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

The population density was 110.1 people per square mile (42.51/kmē), giving it the 46th most densely populated county among the North Carolina. In the county the population was spread out, with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 115.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 123.8 females. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 52682, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 41.93% White, 56.77% Black or African American, 0.32% American Indian, 0.35% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.61% from two or more races.
