Edgar County is one of the 102 county of Illinois, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 19704 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 18692, It is the 60th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county comprises an area of 624.18 square miles (1616.62 square kilometre), of which, 623.55 square miles (1614.99 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.63 square miles (1.63 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 33rd largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 18692, The racial makeup of the county was 96.83% White, 2% Black or African American, 0.2% American Indian, 0.47% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.5% from two or more races.
