Durham County is a county in the United States of North Carolina. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Durham County is home to 223314 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 262715, making it North Carolina's sixth largest county. The county spans an area of 297.79 square miles (771.27 square kilometre), of which, 290.32 square miles (751.93 square kilometre) of it is land and 7.47 square miles (19.35 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 13th smallest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 22.9% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 34.8% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 262715, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 56.55% White, 37.23% Black or African American, 0.41% American Indian, 4.39% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.36% from two or more races.
