Durham City is a one of the Durham and Wake counties, North Carolina, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 187035 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 223284, It is North Carolina's fourth largest by population . The city spans an area of 94.92 mi˛ (245.84 square kilometre), of which, 94.63 square miles (245.09 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.28 square miles (0.73 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fifth largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 187035 people, 74981 households, and 43558 families residing in the city. The population density was 1976.4 people per square mile (763.09/km˛), making it the 20th most densely populated city in North Carolina. There were 80797 housing units at an average density of 853.8 per square mile (329.65/km˛). The average household size was 2.37 persons, and the average family size was 3.01 persons. In the city Population was distributed with 22.9% under the age of 18, 14.1% from 18 to 24, 35.6% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who were 65 or older. The racial makeup of the city was 45.51% White, 43.81% Black or African American, 0.31% American Indian, 3.64% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, 1.94% from two or more races and 4.75% Other races.
